Hot Pink, Black and Turquoise Shower Cake

I made this cake for my cousin's personal shower.

I had to travel for a couple of hours to the shower, so I opted for a design with add-ons only. No fancy decorating!

So this was a very easy cake to do. I used the black lace to give it a "garter" effect. I think it worked. The only thing I don't like are the diamonds. They look like headlight in these pics!! I didn't notice that at the shower, so it must be from the camera flash.

Congrats, Anna!!

Cake Pops!

This was my first attempt at making Cake Pops!

They were a big hit, even with the adults in the crowd!

These are so easy to make.

First bake a cake according to the directions. After the cake has cooled, simple crumble it in a large bowl. (Note: I used a cake that I had in the freezer for a birthday that didn't get used. I let it thaw, then crumbled it.)

Next, add about a cup to a cup and a half of frosting. I used a homemade recipe, but you can use store bought it you want.

Mix it all together forming a big ball. Break off small pieces and roll into small balls.

Place the small balls on a cookie sheet and freeze.

Next, melt some chocolate and dip the stick into the chocolate before inserting into the cake ball. This will help keep the ball on the stick while dipping it. Stick the cookie sheet in the freezer for a few minutes to let the stick set good.

Dip the cake pop in melted chocolate, almond bark, etc. Swirl a little to get the excess off. Sprinkle with colored sugar, candies, etc.

Stick the cake pops in a piece of Styrofoam as you finish dipping them. Put them back in the freezer for a couple of hours.

That's it!!

Chocolate Wasted Cake!!

I've been dying to try this cake ever since I saw this post over at Art of Dessert! So here's my version.

My nephew, who can never get a cake that is chocolaty enough, asked me to make his 20th birthday cake. I knew exactly which cake I was going to try!

I used Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa instead of regular cocoa. Wow!!

I did cut one cup of cocoa out of the frosting though, since I used the dark. I was afraid it was going to be a "Death By Chocolate" cake!

Here are a few of the cupcakes:

How would I rate this recipe?

It was a more dense cake that I prefer, but the people at the party who prefer a dense cake loved it! My husband was one of them.

I'd say Peyton enjoyed his too!! Check out those chocolate eyes!!

Happy Birthday, James!!

Hot Pink & Black Shower Cake

I made this cake last night for a friend's shower. It's really hot pink, although it doesn't look that way in these pics!!

This is the first time I've drawn those swirly thingies on a cake! I'm not real crazy about it, but I learned a lot.

This is the first time I made fondant ribbon roses as well. Learned a lot about them too!

Congrats, Charity!

Music Graduation Cake

This cake was made for a friend for his graduation. He's the music minister at his church so he wanted to mix the graduation theme with a music theme.

Since he is an avid piano player, he liked this cake that I made last year for another friend. So I made the same basic cake and added the graduation cap.

The cake is covered with fondant, with fondant add-ons. The graduation cap and tassel are not edible.

Since they were concerned that the one cake might not be enough for their guests, we decided to to a sheet cake as well.

Congratulations, Chris!!

Gift Box Cake

This is a Gift Box cake my daughter, Ruth, and I made for her future sister-in-law's shower.

Under the layers of green fondant tissue paper is a white sheet cake with buttercream frosting - the bottom part of the box. Everything else is fondant.

For the box lid, I used a piece of styrofoam. I didn't think I would be able to support it if it was made of cake, but after doing it, I think it would have worked. So next time . . .

You also might notice the plastic in the bow. I found out two days before the party that the party was that week and not the next! Not enough time for a fondant bow to dry. So I improvised by cutting strips of plastic from a 2-liter plastic bottle to hold the bow up. It worked perfectly, except it showed up in the pics! It wasn't so noticeable at the shower.

Other than not enough of the fondant bra showing, I like the results.

Congratulations, Calah!!

He wanted a John Deere themed cake and this is what I came up with.

Camouflage Cake

This cake was for a friend's birthday this past weekend.

It was my first attempt at a camouflage cake, and it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped! I did learn a lot, though, so next time should be much better.

Anyway, I hope you had a great birthday, Shawna!!

Brown & Teal Wedding Shower Cake

I made this simple cake for a wedding shower my daughter gave for a friend.

It's just a simple 8" and 10" two-tier frosted with buttercream with silk flower and ribbon garnishes. The "H" was a foam letter I picked up at Michael's. I painted it with brown craft paint, added "diamonds" and inserted small dowel rods cut to about three inches long into the bottom of each leg.

A very simple cake that anyone can make!

The cake flavors were strawberry with a cream cheese filling and chocolate with chocolate hazelnut filling.

Apple Laptop/Computer Cake

My son-in-law needed a cake for a going away party at his office. She is apparently their computer techie, thus the computer cake!!

I made a sheet cake, iced it and covered it with gray tinted fondant. I used a cookie cutter to cut out the apple, then modified it so that it would resemble the Apple emblem. All the add ons are made of fondant.

Lakers Cake

Our oldest son turned thirty last week! So, of course, we had to have a party. Since he's a BIG Lakers fan, my daughter-in-law decided to go with an appropriate cake!! But we had to make it work with a Marble Cake that was my grandmother's recipe, which is his favorite cake. Since this particular cake is made in an angel food cake pan, it kind of dictated the size of the layers, unless we wanted to put it in the middle and have enough cake to feed a hundred people!!

So the cake looks a little top heavy!! Oh, well, no one seemed to mind. This was actually my first time to use a sports ball cake pan. But I have a grandson now, so I'm sure there will be more of them in the future!

I cut the "Lakers" out of fondant. I printed it off in the size I needed, laid the paper on the rolled out fondant, then with a pencil I traced each letter, applying just enough pressure to indent the fondant. Then I removed the paper and cut out the letters with a small knife.

The girls sure had fun helping their dad and uncle blow out the candles! Especially since they were the kind that keep lighting again!!

Happy Birthday, Bobby!!

Safari Birthday Cake

Another cake from this weekend! I've been busy!!

This one was for my oldest son's friend, Tim. He turned 30 on Sunday. It was supposed to have animals on top, but it was decided that it would be too 'kid' looking! Then, I didn't get a picture with the '30' on top. Sorry!

Tim has all kinds of animals at his place, so the cake was appropriate. My grandkids love visiting them!

The 10" bottom tier was white cake with dulce de leche filling. The 8" top tier was chocolate with chocolate mousse filling. It is covered with fondant. Approximately 45 servings.

25th Wedding Anniversary Cake

I did this cake this past weekend for a customer's in-laws 25th wedding celebration!

I didn't see the finished product since my customer set it up herself. But she was kind enough to send me a couple of pictures! Thank you, Rachel!!

The Precious Moments figurines graced their original wedding cake. Hmm, I wonder if I have the cake topper from my wedding cake anywhere? I'll have to look.

The 10" bottom tier was chocolate with chocolate mousse filling. The 6" tier was white with a dulce de leche filling. I used buttercream frosting. The flowers were made of fondant. Approximately 45 servings.

Pumpkin Cake

Here's a Pumpkin Cake I whipped up this weekend for an auction at our Christian school. It's a Marble Cake covered with a Fudge Frosting and then iced with buttercream frosting. The stem is fondant.
I baked the cake in a bundt pan, then curved the edges to help create the pumpkin shape.

90th Birthday Party

This past weekend I made several cakes for a friend's 90th birthday party. The event was put on by her daughter, who is seventy. It was an all day event, an open house type setting, with people coming and going as they wanted.

Here is the main cake. It was basically for decoration - it wasn't touched.

I made six 1/2 sheet cakes that were divided by piece, each with a red rosebud. This is what was served to the guests. The cake flavors were white, chocolate and strawberry.
I wanted to post a couple pictures of the fruit table. It was beautiful!

An idea to stash away for future consideration.

Pink & Green Wedding Shower Cake

This cake was made for the wedding shower of a friend. Her wedding colors are sage green & pink, so I tried to follow the color theme.

The bottom layer was a 10" strawberry cake with strawberry filling and the top layer was a 6" white cake with lemon filling.

I used fondant to get the smooth look I wanted. After it was set up, I added the pink daisies and ribbon.

I set it on a pedestal cake plate, topped with a silver cake boared, that I had covered with pink and green sparkle netting.

A very simple but eye-catching cake.

Cauliflower, Anyone??

I had a customer ask for a cauliflower cake. Definitely something I've never done before. I didn't know where to start!!
So I made an 8" layer cake and covered it in a buttercream icing. Then I just kind of rounded globs of icing on the top. I then made leaves out of fondant and shaped them on the cake, curling the edges back and overlapping them.
It actually turned out better than I expected! My customer said it got a lot of comments.
